Happy April Fools' Day!

April 1st is April Fools' Day, comparable to the December 28th celebration of el Día de los Santos Inocentes. As a friend of mine put it, April 1st is a day when the internet becomes mostly useless. Click here for a summary of Google´s jokes and tricks on this day [in Spanish].

Super Bowl Sunday

Today is Super Bowl XLV: Pittsburgh Steelers versus Green Bay Packers.

The Super Bowl is one of the most watched events in U.S. society. As American football is one of the most popular sports in the USA, many people tune in. However, almost as famous as the sport and the NFL (National Football League) teams are the commercials that show during the breaks. Super Bowl commercials are legendary. Check some out!

Kick off is at 5:30 CST (Central Standard Time). Also, go Steelers! (Explanation: Chicago Bears don't like Green Bay Packers.)

Happy Groundhog Day!

In the United States and Canada, February 2nd is called Groundhog Day (or día de la marmota)! On this day, we watch a groundhog emerge from its hole. If he sees his shadow, then we have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn´t see his shadow, then we know spring will be here soon! This year, he didn´t see his shadow, so let´s hope for warmer weather soon!

Of course, he´s only right about 37% of the time...

FRIENDSHIP'S DAY 14th February

St. Valentine's Day has been considered an advertising and marketing day designed only to make people consume. However, many people believe in its mithological origin and they enjoy this day celebrating it with their lovers.

From our school we would like St. Valentine to become the Friendship's Day. A day when you can tell the people you appreciate the most what you feel for them. So if you admire someone, take the opportunity and tell them how much you like, love or facy them.

It will be a very lovely memory and good action.

ENGLISH MARKET (ENGLISH EXCHANGE 2010-2011)

The group of students taking part in the English exchange are organising an English market to subsidize some of the trip expenses. This is why they have decided to turn the hall of our school into a market where they are going to sell: T-shirts with the exchange logo, second-hand books, accessories such hairbands, earrings, bracelets...or desserts from homemade recipes.

We hope your visit on 24th February and we wish you to enjoy it.

THANKSGIVING DAY

One of the main goals in the European Section, apart from achieving the communicative competence, is that our students know the English speaking countries culture. Thus, this week, on Thursdays 25th we are going to celebrate 'Thanksgiving day', designing some speficic activities, listening to the version of the classical Gloria Gaynor's 'I will survive' song, colouring the main characters of this festival: pilgrims, turkeys,  American native people, ships... for students to learn the value and importance of this day.

Writing to the World

With our first year bilingual students, we've decided to start a Pen Pal Program! A Pen Pal Program is when students write and exchange letters with one another. Through a contact from our auxiliare de conversación, the students will be writing letters in English to American students in Chicago, Illinois. It will be a great way for them to make international friendships while practicing their conversational English. We´ve already sent off our letters and are eagerly waiting to hear back from the students of Morgan Park Academy!

Happy Halloween!

The bilingual program is dedicated to teaching English to the students, but we like to have fun while we do it! Not only do we study the English language, but we also work to understand and experience English cultures. In many countries, for example the USA, people celebrate Halloween. October 31st is a day of costumes, trick-or-treating, and ghosts, ghouls, and goblins! This year our English classes wrote Halloween poems and drew pictures, our history classes learned about the history of Halloween, and our music classes watched the "This Is Halloween" song from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Enjoy the pictures!
-------

Happy Halloween
